Twitter has become the go-to source for political news and a driving force behind some of the year’s biggest political stories. Top campaign advisors like Romney’s Erick Fehnstrom and Obama’s David Axelrod engaged in Twitter battles throughout the year. Even electoral polling used Twitter to help forecast this year’s results. By analyzing Romney and Obama followers on Twitter and the percentage of them that were fake accounts, two companies, Barracuda Networks and StatusPeople, both projected President Obama as the winner. Obama had a higher percentage of fake accounts following him, which both services, accurately as it turned out, took to mean greater popularity and more votes.
